Nigeria’s Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, is advocating for enhanced partnerships between federal, state, and local governments to manage the nation’s water resources effectively.
According to Prof Utsev, the Water Resources and Sanitation ministry is focused on improving water and food security, sanitation, and hygiene and enhancing climate resilience strategies through stakeholders’ engagement.
At the Thirty First Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation, held at Ibom Hall, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Professor Utsev, in a keynote address, emphasised the need for effective management of the nation’s water resources in a sustainable, equitable, and efficient manner to enhance the well-being of Nigerians and ensure environmental sustainability.
While highlighting his ministry’s achievements, Prof Utsev announced plans to construct additional dams in the country to expand water storage capacity. These measures are deliberate measures to mitigate the impact of perennial flooding and enhance food security through irrigation agriculture.
Water is on the concurrent list of the Constitution, which empowers both the Federal and State Governments to manage and regulate within their jurisdiction, Terhemen Oraduen, the Minister’s Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity, quotes Prof Utsev in a statement.
