US President Donald Trump has declared at a White House news conference that the US will “take over” Gaza and “do a job with it too.”
Trump had suggested during a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Palestinians should leave Gaza to be housed in parts of Jordan, Egypt and other nearby countries.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We’ll own it,” President Trump said at a White House news conference.
PM Netanyahu says Trump’s plan is an idea “worth paying attention to.” He is the first foreign leader to meet President Trump, in his second term.
Hamas official, Sami Abu Zuhri, told Reuters that any idea to “take over” Gaza and resettle Palestenians in other countries is “capable of igniting the region.”
He called the proposal “ridiculous” and “absurd.”
Jordan and Egypt have rejected the idea of Palestinians being resettled – while the Palestinian ambassador to the UN says “our homeland is our homeland,” reports the BBC.
