China has vowed to fight the US “to the bitter end” and announced counter measures – which include up to 15% tariffs on a range of American agricultural and food products.
This follows the commencement of US President Donald Trump’s long-threatened 25% tariffs against Canada and Mexico on Tuesday, 4th March, in Washington DC. This is also as did a new 10% levy against China.
Canada is also retaliating with immediate 25% tariffs against $30bn worth of US goods, with an additional $125bn worth of products to be hit over the next 21 days, says a report by the BBC.
Experts have warned American consumers will likely face higher costs for certain products – from cars, whiskey and tequila, to houses and maple syrup.
Meanwhile, Germany’s economy minister Robert Habeck, has said that Europe would respond with “unity and self-confidence” if President Trump imposed tariffs on its products.
Despite wanting a deal, Habeck adds that “the EU will not be pushed around.”
